Update [Wednesday, July 20]: President Obama has signed the Global Food Security Act into law, stating, “I know that with the continued effort and support that this legislation provides, we can achieve what was just a few years ago the unimaginable: We can end global poverty and hunger within our lifetimes.”

He added, “Let’s make hunger history.”

Earlier this week, Congress took a historic step by passing the Global Food Security Act of 2016–an important piece of bipartisan legislation that reaffirms the U.S. commitment to ending global hunger, poverty and child malnutrition. Stop Hunger Now was one of 40 organizations that voiced support of this important legislation.

The passage of the Global Food Security Act on July 6 established U.S. efforts on global food security into law. This was a major victory for worldwide efforts to advance global nutrition and alleviate poverty through agricultural development, which aligns with Stop Hunger Now’s efforts. This is a historic moment for all international development organizations who are working tirelessly to enhance food security and ending hunger around the globe.

“Stop Hunger Now was proud to play an advocacy role in driving support for the Global Food Security Act,” said Rod Brooks, Stop Hunger Now President & CEO. “This is a major step toward our goal of ending world hunger in our lifetime, and we are excited about the progress this legislation will facilitate in the areas of economic growth, agricultural development and food security.”
