Programs
1. Meal Packaging Events
Rise Against Hunger can provide corporations a turnkey, hands-on and powerful volunteer event. Rise Against Hunger brings everything you need to your location to facilitate the packaging event. We hold a brief educational session and packaging orientation with your volunteers, then package meals for 1 to 2 hours. We can typically accommodate group events ranging from 30 to 1,000 employees. Our minimum commitment is 30 employees packaging 10,800 meals in just 2 hours.
As part of your corporate social responsibility program you can partner with us by sponsoring a meal packaging event right in your own office. We can organize a meal packing event with a minimum participation of only Php 178,300.00 and 35 people volunteering for less than 3 hours. With this amount you can already package 1,800 meal packs that can feed up to 180 children 5 days a week for six months.
2. Good Food Grocer
The mission of Good Food Grocer (GFG) is to end hunger, improve food security and reduce food wastage. GFG is envisioned to be the first food bank social franchise in the Philippines. It works on the premise that “Good Food is for all.” The project will be run by Rise Against Hunger Philippines in cooperation with private and public organizations.
Main activities will include the organization of food banking systems in the following pilot cities:
- Taguig City (the mother unit to be operated by Rise Against Hunger Philippines)
- Quezon City (with Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines)
- Mandaue City (with Simply Share Foundation)
- Bacolod City (with Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation)

3. School Feeding Program
School feeding programs have been defined by the World Bank as “targeted social safety nets that provide both educational and health benefits to the most vulnerable children, thereby increasing enrollment rates, reducing absenteeism, and improving food security at the household level.” School meals have been shown to increase the nutritional status of school-age children in a variety of ways. School feeding programs have the capacity to increase gender equity in access to education, which allows for gender equity across all spheres of social and economic life. School feeding programs reduce the costs of sending girls to school and allow for an increased number of girls to be sent to school by their families. Furthermore, improvements in female literacy that come from increased education have been linked to declining rates of fertility, increased economic opportunities, and other markers of female empowerment.

4. First 1000 Days
Rise Against Hunger Philippines has partnered with the Department of Health (DOH) in its First 1,000 Days Program targeting pregnant and lactating women. Rise Against Hunger Meal packs are used in the supplemental feeding of pregnant and lactating women that visit rural health clinics for antenatal care, post-partum check-ups, mothers’ classes, nutrition classes, vitamin supplementation, vaccinations as well as medical check-ups of children. Monthly rations of meal packs are given to the women as they visit the clinics. The meals not only provide the necessary nutrition of the women but also serve as incentives to regularly visit the clinics and attend classes. The DOH partnership is now on-going in the provinces of Zambales and Pampanga among 100 indigenous women. Health and nutrition of mothers and babies will be monitored.

5. Farm to Fork Program
Rise Against Hunger supports initiatives that ensure the sustainable production and consumption of food systems in such a way that the economic, social and environmental bases to generate food security and nutrition for future generations are not compromised. Rise Against Hunger also assists in developing double small-scale producer incomes and productivity to end rural poverty by increasing the income of the small-scale producers who hold the key to sustainably feeding a growing population.
In the Philippines, Rise Against Hunger does this by “contract farming” its vegetable requirements from small scale indigenous farmers. Through its partnership with the Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation (NVC), Rise Against Hunger (Philippines) buys its supplies of vegetable needed for its meal packs from 100 farmers in the upland communities of San Carlos, Negros province. The farmers are members of the Bukidnon Organic Farmers Association and Iliranan Tribal Council. The farmers are GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certified, which means that their produce are safe for human consumption, being free from biological, chemical and physical contamination. Their produce are also certified organic.
Through this scheme, the farmers are able to grow their own food. Their excess productions are consolidated by their cooperatives and sold at fair market prices to NVC which then dehydrates the vegetables for RAH. Shavings from the dehydration process are composed by NVC and then given to the farmers to use as fertilizers. The dehydrated vegetable are mixed in the meal packs of Rise Against Hunger which are then used to support supplemental feeding programs in the farmers’ communities. This way, the “farm to fork” cycle is completed.

6. Disaster Relief
Another core focus of Rise Against Hunger is responding to crises–both natural and man-made. From droughts to floods, in conflict zones and transitioning political situations, food is often the most immediate need. When everyday access to food, wages, and market systems are destroyed in the wake of emergencies, Rise Against Hunger works through a network of in-country partners to address these needs. We strive to ensure aid is efficiently and effectively deployed to and received by communities when it is needed most. Rise Against Hunger Philippines has distributed meal packs to over 1,800 families that have been displaced by the Marawi siege.

7. Soap for Hope
With the mission to build more sustainable communities, Rise Against Hunger Philippines in partnership with Conrad Manila and Sealed Air/Diversey, embarked on a new livelihood initiative, the Soap for Hope project. It strives to divert used hotel soap into a recycled handcrafted soap readily available for sale in a considerable price. This became an income-generating activity of the selected mothers of Barangay Ususan in Taguig City. After the collection of used hotel soaps, it is bowdlerized into cubes, sanitized with Sealed Air/Diversey bleach solution and infused with fruit zests, pressed into 500-gram soap brick, left to dry in the sun, and then the scented bars are ready to use.
It also offers a sustainable way for our partner hotel to ensure that the used soap doesn’t end up in the landfill. A typical 400-room hotel generates 3.5 tons of solid soap waste. That waste either goes to landfill, or is shipped to a global recycling facility, costing hotels hefty fees.
With this initiative, we significantly contribute in addressing the economic, social and environmental issue within the communities we serve.
8. Bread for Bread
The Bread for Bread Project is envisioned as a sustainable bread distribution program wherein consumers can purchase nutritious bread and donate at the same time equivalent pieces of nutritious pandesal for school feeding programs.
The pandesal bread recipe was developed by Conrad Manila (a Hilton Hotel) and fortified with Kraft Heinz micronutrient powder will be marketed by Rise Against Hunger Philippines in support school feeding programs. Pandesal is a popular yeast-raised bread in the Philippines. It will be composed of soy flour, malunggay powder, iodized salt and micronutrient powder. The Nutripan (Nutritious Pandesal) will be our own version of the Nutribun. The Nutribun program was implemented in the early 1970s as a supplementary feeding program for public elementary schoolchildren.
The nutripan will be baked and sold at the outlets of RAH, Conrad Manila and other NGOs through its Bread for Bread Program. This means that for every bread sold, another bread will be given to support feeding programs
9. Good Food Farm
The Good Food Farm is an urban, organic, community farm dedicated to alleviating hunger through sustainable agriculture. We grow and give organic produce for local food pantries and provide experiential education for the community about sustainable agriculture practices and food justice.
The Good Food Farm is envisioned to be an urban demonstration farming project that will improve food security, address hunger and reduce malnutrition.
Components are the following:
- Vegetable and fruit garden
- Aquaponics to raise tilapia, catfish and green leafy vegetables
- Vermiculture composting
- Greenhouse
- Workshop area
- Retail area
- Good Food Kitchen
This project entitled the Good Food Kitchen proposes to respond to the hunger situation of selected urban households by improving their dietary diversity whilst creating an income stream to poverty-stricken women. Improving dietary diversity will be done by applying social marketing principles that look at supply and demand chain management of available and affordable nutritious food.
Rise Against Hunger Philippines will establish Good Food Kitchens as part of the value chains of the Good Food Grocer (the food bank) and the Good Food Farms (community gardens). Surplus from the Good Food Grocers and the Good Food Farms will be cooked into nutritious meals or processed into bottled/canned products by volunteers and women from the communities where the food banks and farms are located. The Good Food Kitchens will serve as the nexus of community development activities that will include health and nutrition, income generation, livelihood and people empowerment.
The goal of the Good Food Kitchen is to improve the nutritional content and diversity of diets in Filipino food insecure urban households. The objectives are:
- To increase the availability of affordable, nutritious consumer food products
- To increase the demand for nutritious consumer food products
11. Policy and Advocacy Rise Against Hunger Philippines believes that creating a food secure country requires both effective programs and good public policies. The organization is committed to furthering the integration of practice and policy to achieve sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty. To do this, Rise Against Hunger Philippines works closely with government agencies, anti-hunger organizations, corporations, and foundations to create awareness and generate adequate funding that will effectively address hunger, malnutrition and food security.
Rise Against Hunger Philippines currently advocates for the creation of a Presidential Commission on Zero Hunger and for the passage of a law to institutionalize food banking in the Philippines.

- Research
Recognizing the extent of the country’s problem with hunger and malnutrition, and the limited resources to address this, Rise Against Hunger strongly supports the utilization of evidence-based interventions. Recently, Rise Against Hunger, Philippines has embarked on two research projects as part of its program monitoring and evaluation. A preliminary study on the influence of providing vitamin-fortified meal packs on compliance with family planning and maternal health care services during pregnancy, a qualitative study among Aeta women in Porac, Pampanga, was conducted and the initial results were presented in the 2nd National Family Planning Conference in Cebu City on November 7-9, 2017. Another study in the pipeline is a documentation of perceptions, challenges and lessons learned on the food assistance and relief operations for internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Marawi City, who temporarily reside in the evacuation centers in Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur. To further promote evidence-based programming and knowledge sharing, Rise Against Hunger, Philippines also offers research consulting services on topics related to food, nutrition and health.
