Church of the Servant Packages Their One Millionth Meal to Fight Global Hunger

(Oklahoma City, OK, 5/1/2016) – After six years of packaging meals to fight world hunger, Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City is reaching a milestone: one million meals packaged to fight global hunger.

On May 1, one thousand Church of the Servant volunteers packaged meals with Stop Hunger Now and celebrated  achieving a total of one million meals packaged since 2010. Stop Hunger Now CEO Rod Brooks was in attendance and presented an award during two morning church services.

“Our church believes in the mission and purpose of why Stop Hunger Now exists: ending hunger in our lifetime!” says Scott Smith, Director of Discipleship and Membership.  “We join in that mission because we know it is truly making a difference saving lives.” Church of the Servant has been dedicated to packaging meals with the nonprofit since March of 2010 when they hosted their first event. Smith said, “It is a tangible way for us to respond in faith and be a part of something much larger than ourselves.”

Stop Hunger Now meal packaging events are a volunteer-based program that coordinates the streamlined packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

Around the world, nearly 795 million people lack adequate food. Stop Hunger Now operates meal packaging locations in 20 cities throughout the U.S. and 6 international locations in South Africa, Malaysia, the Philippines, Italy, India  and Peru. Last year, more than 350,000 volunteers from corporations, churches, schools and civic organizations packaged Stop Hunger Now meals.

Founded in 1998, Stop Hunger Now has delivered aid and disaster relief supplies in the form of food, medical supplies, clothing, school supplies and more to thousands of disaster victims and other hungry and vulnerable people in 73 countries.

“What we want everyone to know is that hunger is solvable and is the common thread among the world’s most challenging issues,” said Rod Brooks, President and CEO of Stop Hunger Now.  “When hunger is targeted, you give leverage and hope to every other cause including poverty, disease, education and the welfare of women and children.”
