At the Ganta United Methodist Hospital in Ganta, Liberia, pregnant and nursing mothers and those suffering from malaria come to seek treatment. Administered by the United Methodist Church of Liberia, the hospital was established in 1926 and is now located in Nimba County. What began as a rural health post has today grown to a regional referral hospital. About 60% of the residents of Nimba County are beneficiaries of their health care programs. Thus, the hospital has an estimated service population of approximately 277,215. Many of these patients have compromised immune systems, compounding the risk of contracting COVID-19. These meals and medicines will provide life-saving aid for Liberia’s most vulnerable who are challenged with limited resources and the threat of malnutrition.
Our partner Caritas Health Services supports patients suffering from malaria, typhoid fever and respiratory infections — those whose immune systems are often too weak to recover from their conditions. While COVID-19 spreads, it poses a threat to these patients as those with pre-existing health conditions are more susceptible. Established in 1981, Caritas Sierra Leone served as the relief agency for the Catholic Church. Today, its health services are active in various fields such as – HIV/AIDS prevention, food security, emergency and humanitarian relief, youth empowerment, environmental protection, poverty eradication and gender equality. Caritas Sierra Leone opens health clinics to provide medicine to people in dire need of health care, provides agricultural training and food processing to help farmers increase their productivity and prepares communities to cope with emergency situations.
Communities in the countries we serve are often heavily populated, and face poor nutrition and hygiene, meaning diseases like COVID-19 can spread more rapidly.
