All of us have heard stories from writers and authors saying that it took 7 or 8 years, or maybe even longer, to complete their latest work. Getting Off Our Buts took me almost 35 years to complete. Actually, I don’t write that slowly, it’s just that I spent about 33 of those years practicing how to make mission happen. The actual writing took less than 2 years.

The book was born out of my desire to see congregations experience the joy of being actively involved in changing the world. In my early days as a pastor I was frustrated by my inability to fully engage the wonderful folks in my congregations in reaching out to meet the needs that surrounded us. I never seemed able to move my churches off of dead center when it came to missions and outreach.

Then I spent over 30 years actively walking alongside the poor and the hungry of our country and around the world. I worked with hundreds of congregations and organizations in thousands of different programs and projects.

I learned that all of us can make a real difference in the world. I learned that all of us can be involved in healing the brokenness that surrounds us. And I discovered that the perfect guide to making mission happen is actually a Biblical Blueprint.

The Feeding of the 5,000, the only miracle in all four gospels, provides a simple yet foolproof plan for getting any sized group actively involved in making a difference in the world.

After using that blueprint myself for over three decades I decided to share it so that congregations everywhere could realize that Getting Off Our Buts is the critical step in making mission happen.
