Woodley, a second grader living in Boukan Kare, Haiti, lives with dwarfism, a condition which means consistent access to nutritious meals is crucial for his well-being. To support Woodley and his six siblings, his father works as a mason and his mother operates a small business from their home. Given the state of food insecurity in their community, Woodley’s parents are fortunate to have income.

Many of Woodley’s classmates walk more than two hours to attend school each day, and without regular meals, would have little energy to focus in class and excel in their studies. At school, along with his classmates and siblings, Woodley is guaranteed Rise Against Hunger meals each day distributed by partner Cross International. With the continued support of Rise Against Hunger and further focus on his education, Woodley hopes to explore his love of writing and aspires to become a doctor.

In 2017, Rise Against Hunger impacted 1.4 million lives, like Woodley’s, through meals and other aid, and engaged almost 400,000 volunteers. But in a world where 815 million people don’t receive enough nutrition to lead active, healthy lives, we realize we can do even more for Woodley and others like him by lending our collective voice on hunger-related issues. We are committed to fighting hunger not only through meal packaging and sustainable development projects, but through our growing Advocacy initiative, and we hope you will join us!

Advocacy can take many forms, including direct contact with an elected official or other decision maker through letter writing, phone calls, social media or in-person meetings. Advocacy can also include raising public awareness about hunger issues, reaching out to the media, or participating in a targeted campaign. We are finding ways to do each of these things, and hope you’ll get involved.
